GROUNDWATER MANAGEMENT AND SOIL REMEDIATION OPPORTUNITIES IN BRAZIL PARTICIPATE IN A FREE SEMINAR

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2009
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2009

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the Ontario Ministry of International Trade and Investment, the Ontario Ministry of Environment, with the support of the Canadian Consulate in Sao Paulo, would like to invite you to attend the breakfast-seminar Groundwater and Soil Remediation Opportunities in Brazil 2009.

This seminar includes a presentation from Dr. Everton de Oliveira, President of the Brazilian Groundwater Association – ABAS. Dr. De Oliveira is also the President of Hidroplan, a consulting engineering company in Brazil. Among the speakers will be Ms. Mariangela Lima, Environment Trade Commissioner at the Consulate General of Canada in São Paulo.

Although Brazil is well known worldwide for its abundance of surface water, groundwater has acquired an increasingly prominent role in the Brazilian water market. Most cities throughout the country depend heavily on groundwater. ABAS estimates that 40,000-50,000 wells are drilled every year across the country. Groundwater already corresponds for 40% to 50% of the water used in Brazil.

Site assessment and remediation markets are strong and environmental hydrogeology is growing at a fast pace. A survey by ABAS identified more than 400 environmental hydrogeology companies in Brazil. Most of them are single-person businesses and lack expertise to operate in a growing market. Opportunities for joint-ventures abound in this market of $1 billion a year. The mining and oil industry are important clients for hydrogeology companies: drilling, management, modelling and contaminant hydrogeology expertise are in demand.

Several government initiatives are in place to ensure a better regulated and stronger market for groundwater use and management in Brazil. The federal water regulatory agency-ANA, through a cooperation agreement with ABAS, offers training to state regulators throughout the country. ANA and the World Bank have hired studies for basic hydrogeology mapping for several states. Approximately $10 million are available for the initial studies in selected regions.

Solutions – Technologies - Services

The Groundwater market in Brazil requires solutions, technologies and services in the following areas:

If you are interested in doing business in Brazil, this is an event you will not want to miss.
