Designed to outshine all other sources of residential lighting, the new Vu1 light bulb by New York City-based Vu1 Corporation harnesses familiar technology to deliver a revolutionary new take on illumination.

Promising light without compromise, the Vu1 bulb safely lights your home with a soft, natural luminescence that eliminates the risk of mercury poisoning from broken CFLs and the high cost of expensive LEDs.

Coming soon to a Lowe's home improvement store near you, the Vu1 R30 bulb is the first in the Vu1 portfolio to receive UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification and is specifically designed for direct replacement of standard 65W bulbs for recessed lighting.

Drawing less than 20W, the Vu1 is 70 per cent more efficient than its conventional incandescent counterpart and lasts up to five times longer -- 11,000 hours on average.

Cleaner, safer alternative lighting

The Vu1 contains absolutely no toxic materials and is extremely safe for both everyday use and disposal, which is particularly important when there are children in the home.

While CFLs had been lauded as a more energy-efficient alternative to incandescent bulbs, their dirty little secret has finally come to life: they contain mercury, a neurotoxin.

With the Vu1, there's no risk of exposure to dangerous gases or other harmful substances.

Superior light quality with full-spectrum colour rendering

The Vu1 lamp illuminates instantly with a soft, diffused light greater than 90 CRI.

Where CFLs and LEDs both leave gaps in the colour spectrum that result in a golden or bluish cast and harsh light, the Vu1 properly renders all colours in the spectrum for a truer, more natural illumination. Plus, the Vu1 is fully dimmable, just like an incandescent, and can operate in any position without overheating.

While the Vu1 looks like a normal light from the outside -- both on and off (no weird curlicues to detract from your décor or collect dust) -- the inside resembles something out of a cathode-ray TV set, but on a much smaller scale.

The Vu1 uses a patented electron stimulated luminescenceTM technology to generate light: the interior surface of the bulb is coated with an RGB phosphorous coating that is "sprayed" with a broad-spectrum electron beam, much like the CRT console-style TV sets of yesteryear.

This results in a more pleasing, whiter light that's safe: the vacuum inside the bulb literally contains nothing.

Priced at $14.98 per bulb, the Vu1 is considerably less expensive than LEDs for home use, making it both affordable and visually appealing to go green at home.

"In our experience, people want to buy energy efficient products, but not at the expense of making your home unattractive," says Vu1 CEO Scott Blackstone. "Most other bulbs trade light quality for energy efficiency and people have been disappointed by that. We've achieved a better balance with a very efficient product that delivers good quality of light at an affordable price."
