Three provocative and diverse keynote speakers have been announced for the 2nd annual International Sites and Spills Expo, scheduled for November 7 to 8, 2012 at the International Centre, just west of Toronto near Pearson Airport.

In addition to two days of hands-on learning and networking, the conference welcomes keynote presentations by environmental lawyer David McRobert, successful entrepreneur Gordon McGuinty, and Hoarders TV host Cory Chalmers.

"Our events team has worked hard this year to put together a really special program," says HazMat Management magazine Editor Guy Crittenden. "They surveyed opinions from last year's delegates and also spoke to quite a few industry experts to make sure the information will help people do their jobs."

McRobert is set to speak under the header Ontario’s New Permit-By-Rule System: How to get into Compliance. He will explore what these systems mean for managers and their compliance systems.

McRobert has worked on a wide range of pollution and waste management policy issues over the years, including the development of the 3Rs regulations (1994) at Ontario’s environment ministry and related legal amendments and policy changes. He is well known in policymaking circles from his tenure from November 1994 to June 2010 as senior advisor and in-house counsel to the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, and also from his work as a senior policy advisor at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment from 1991 to 1993. He was a part-time faculty member and course director at York University between 1994 and 2009 and, in addition to lecturing, has written a list of books on environmental topics.

Chalmers, as host of the popular A&E series Hoarders, will discuss his response to more than 1,500 clean up scenes per year. While Chalmers is primarily focused on the cleanup of biohazards from people who exhibit compulsive hoarding (or “pack-rat”) behavior in their homes, he will also speak on crime scene clean up and other areas such as blood borne pathogens and human disease.

Chalmers is the CEO and founder of Steri-Clean, Inc.

The third keynote speaker is McGuinty, whose talk is labeled Lead, Don’t Follow – The New Realities. McGuinty was responsible for the approval of the largest landfill in Canada, and comes to Sites and Spills with 30 years of business experience.

Recently, McGuinty wrote “TRASHED”, an account of how business interacts and is impacted by politics, the environment and the media.

The Sites & Spills Expo is dedicated to hazardous materials management, site remediation, clean technology and oil and gas issues. Last year’s inaugural event hosted hundreds of specialists in the fields of environmental protection, spill response, development, restoration, contaminated site cleanup and remediation.

The International Sites and Spills Expo is produced by HazMat Management magazine and Business Information Group, Canada’s largest publisher of trade / business magazines and directories.

thumb Remedying Risk Assessment
The terms “remediation” and “dig-and-dump” are, for some, mutually exclusive. Just what are we “remedying” by excavating and dumping soil in a landfill?
By Theresa Phillips

thumb HazWastes lead new EPR regimes
Cradle-to-cradle manufacturing is the Holy Grail for advocates of sustainable manufacturing and packaging, and so-called extended producer responsibility (EPR) is the way to get there, according to them.
