The Quebec provincial police has requested that the lead locomotive in the Lac-Megantic rail disaster be removed from a US auction, The Canadian Press reports.

The locomotive involved in the July 2013 derailment that killed 47 people was to be part of an Aug. 5 auction at a Maine rail yard.

Police say they stepped in to prevent the MMA 5017 Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway engine from being sold until after the completion of the ongoing judicial process.
