The new event format of the third annual Sites and Spills Conference is quickly drawing praise.

As the February 19 and 20, 2014 HazMat and remediation-based conference wrapped today at the International Centre in Toronto, vendors, exhibitors and delegates spoke highly of the conference’s new intimate format. While maintaining a high standard of presentation topics and speakers, conference organizers eliminated concurrent sessions and multiple seminar rooms to create more community among the participants. To bolster that community feeling even further, organizers moved the tradeshow portion of the conference into a more intimate setting to allow for quicker, easier connections for networkers.

The result was a strong, bustling turnout of industry professionals from the U.S., Europe, Canada, and even Israel.

“I’ve been to all three Sites and Spills, and I wouldn’t miss it. There are great connections, and really solid topics. I can go back to the office with some new tools in my pocket,” said Steve McNary, who undertakes remediation management contracts in Ottawa.

McNary and others were able to sit on for Sites and Spills sessions on the 2013 Calgary flooding and the Lac-Megantic railway disaster, two of the more popular topics on the schedule.

Also new to Sites as Spills was a roundtable discussion format. This addition allowed for more fluid and engaging conversation, a nice break from the usual flurry of conference Powerpoints. Experts set up amongst the exhibitors for the discussions, so they too could get in on the action. Discussions about risk assessment and hazardous materials transport were popular choices among attendees.

Lastly, conference delegates were able to capitalize on another new feature at Sites and Spills: free certification workshops. Quantum Murray LP offered workshops on the Ontario Ministry of Labour’s Prevention Starts Here campaign and Emergency Response Assistance Plans.

Thank you to our 2014 Sponsors! See you next year for Sites & Spills 2015.
