One of Canada’s largest environmental consulting firms has been bought by Colorado-based design and engineering company CH2M Hill Cos. Ltd.

TERA Environmental Consultants, a Canadian environmental consulting firm that has worked with clients in pipeline, powerline and oil and gas areas for 31 years, is based in Calgary with some 450 employees. TERA has two other offices in Alberta and one in Victoria, British Columbia.

Terms of the March 3, 2014 deal have not been disclosed, but the deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2014.

“TERA has an excellent reputation for quality service,” said Chris Shea, CH2M Hill's president of the firm's environment and nuclear market, in a joint announcement on March 3, 2014. “These highly skilled and innovative employees will complement CH2M Hill's capabilities throughout Canada, and together we'll be able to provide an expanded suite of services for here and abroad,” Shea added.

TERA President Piers Fothergill said his firm and CH2M Hill share similar values on client service and developing employees.

“The combination of our companies will create more value for our clients through increased breadth of services and will also expand the development and career opportunities for our staff,” Fothergill said in the joint statement.

TERA has worked on more than 10,000 environmental projects across Canada and the U.S. The company specializes in working with energy companies.

TERA received the Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Canada 2009 finalist award for environmental employer of the year.
