Founded 25 years ago, the information service known today as HAZMATMAG.COM is now read by 27,000 readers, mostly in the United States.

For most of its life, the product was a bi-monthly print magazine called HazMat Management, founded way back in 1989.

Editor Guy Crittenden, whose name appeared on the masthead of the very first edition, is excited about the publication’s recent shift to an all-digital platform, and the recently expanded US readership.

“Our most recent circulation count shows we have 19,168 US readers and 7,842 Canadian readers, for a total of 27,010,” Crittenden says, adding that the challenge has been to obtain quality readers who fit the right industry and job title, and for whom email addresses are available.

“When we moved from print publishing to making the product a website and weekly eNewsletter, it became possible to expand the readership without incurring all the prohibitive costs of printing and mailing a magazine in two countries,” adds Crittenden. “Now, we can simply focus on content like news, feature articles and blogs that readers can read on their computers, iPads and smartphones, which is what people are doing these days anyway.”

The eNewsletter is available for free to qualified readers; the company makes money from banner ads on its website and industry events such as its annual Sites and Spills Conference and site remediation technology workshops.

“A few years ago it was frustrating to watch advertisers leave the print product in favor of online opportunities,” says HAZMATMAG.COM Publisher Brad O'Brien. “But we gradually shifted everything online, which lowered costs and allowed us to rebuild a decent profit margin.”

If this is your first time receiving the eNewsletter from HAZMATMAG.COM, you can look forward to weekly news and articles about everything to do with environmental services for industry and government, spill prevention and cleanup, contaminated site remediation, confined space entry, occupational health and safety, personal protection, emergency preparedness and response, and much more!

And be sure to visit the Events section and other areas of the website. Thanks.
