A full-scale spill cleanup took place just outside of Walt Disney World on the grounds of the Reedy Creek Fire Department, but it was about as real as Mickey Mouse himself.
The Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals staged the chemical cleanup for first responders during the 2013 national conference in Orlando, which also marked National Preparedness Month in September at the 26th annual conference.
Officials with the Reedy Creek Special Operations & Response unit were told there was a diesel fuel spill, but no other information was given about the faux emergency.
The scenario involved diesel that had migrated to a set of sodium hypochlorite tanks that could explode.
As reported in the Orlando Business Journal, the emergency response scenario gives AHMP members a chance to see a chemical accident and the response in real time. They are also able to talk to the responders about new technology used to detect spill-related hazards.
