With public hearings currently underway for the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project and the U.S.’s recent rejection of TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline, as well as several electricity projects underway across Canada, the challenges of developing the pipeline and electricity infrastructure to support Canada’s energy resources have never been more apparent.
In recognition of this, GLOBE 2012 -- to be held from March 14 to 16, 2012 in Vancouver -- has added a special session on Energy Infrastructure: The Environment and Economy Debate.
“Energy infrastructure will determine if Canada can fully tap into the potential of its natural resources and reach international markets,” says John Wiebe, president and CEO of the GLOBE Foundation. “Successfully developing this infrastructure calls for a deep understanding of how to protect sensitive ecosystems and the interests of Aboriginal communities.”
This special session provides an opportunity to hear from key players engaged in this increasingly complex activity of North American development. The session will take a town hall approach to encourage a frank and constructive dialogue on issues surrounding pipeline and electricity infrastructure development, including:
-tackling the environmental and economic dilemmas related to resource development and transport
-reconciling seemingly conflicting interests between multiple businesses and stakeholders
-identifying and working with the critical points of convergence and divergence in the future.
Participants will come away with an understanding of mitigating the challenges involved in developing energy infrastructure responsibly.
As one of the world’s largest and longest-running series dedicated to the business of the environment, GLOBE 2012 will feature social gatherings, workshops, and related meetings, offering GLOBE participants well-rounded opportunities to meet fellow attendees, build social networks, exchange views, and do business.
GLOBE’s world-renowned Trade Fair will feature more than 400 exhibitors showcasing the latest in green, clean technologies, innovations and services.
