The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), through its $550-million Green Municipal Fund™, is giving the Régie intermunicipale de restauration et de préservation des Trois-Lacs (RIRPTL) $350,000 to clean up Quebec’s Lac des Trois-Lacs.

The RIRPTL will use the funding to test a remediation measure that will slow aquatic plant growth in the lake through hydraulic dredging.

The bylaw-authorized dredging, which will take place annually, over a two-and-a-half-month period, will improve the lake's water quality by reducing the density of aquatic plants.

It will also reduce sediment accumulation, which, in turn, will improve drinking water quality and promote tourism and recreation activities.

The dredging will benefit residents in the Regional County Municipalities of des Sources and d'Arthabaska, the Town of Asbestos, and the Municipalities of Wotton, Tingwick, and Saint-Rémi-de-Tingwick.

Results from the field test will enable the RIRPTL to plan a second phase of remediation activities.

"FCM's Green Municipal Fund™ offers a range of resources and services that specifically address the sustainable community development needs of municipal governments," said Berry Vrbanovic, FCM president and councillor for the City of Kitchener, Ontario. "The financing and knowledge provided by the Fund supports the development of communities that are more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable."
