The U.S. EPA recently released data on enforcement actions taken during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2001. This data suggests that U.S. EPA enforcement is much more aggressive than most Canadian environment ministries and departments. According to the data, enforcement in 2001 led to prison sentences totaling 256 years and more than $95-million in fines and restitution, plus an additional $25-million in civil penalties paid to the federal government and $25.2-million to the states.
