Gold for Golder: Company wins big for Lac-Mgantic derailment response

A consulting engineering award gala in Quebec has honored environmental services company Golder Associates for its hand in securing the oil spill site around the Lac-Mégantic train derailment before winter arrived.

At the June 10, 2014 gala in Montreal, Golder won the Grands Prix du génie-conseil québécois award in the environment category, as well as a special mention. The company deployed more than 200 professionals to the derailment site in the downtown core, where some 47 people were killed after the train’s oil-filled cars derailed and exploded.

Golder, which has more than 180 offices worldwide and some 8,000 employees, assisted in the project’s water clean-up between July and December 2013.

Award gala host Stéphane Bureau summed up Golder’s involvement at Lac-Mégantic.

When faced with this atypical project, the company was able to get involved without imposing itself, and work in close collaboration with all stakeholders,” said Bureau. “Golder never forgot the human dimension of this catastrophe and took important decisions promptly.”

Denis Millette, a senior hydrogeologist and project director with Golder, was visibly moved by the company’s recognition at the gala.

“I want to sincerely thank the city of Lac-Mégantic, Urgence-Environnement, the Direction régionale de la Montérégie, the Ministère de la Sécurité publique, the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Occupation du territoire, Pomerleau, and all the contractors and suppliers who contributed directly or indirectly to this project,” said Millette.
