John Willms, Willms & Shier Environmental Lawyers LLP
John is an environmental lawyer with many years of expertise in land use planning and municipal law since his Call to the Bar in 1974. He serves as a Director of the Ontario Environmental Industries Association (ONEIA), and is a member of the Environment Committees of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters. In addition to the numerous industry associations he’s actively involved in, John serves on the Technical Advisory Committee of the Canadian Brownfields Network.
John Georgakopoulos, LL.B., M.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons.), Willms & Shier Environmental Lawyers LLP
John is an environmental lawyer, who specializes in advising clients on environmental compliance issues, defending environmental prosecutions, and litigating environmental claims. He has also worked as an environmental scientist with the Ministry of the Environment focusing on emissions inventories, estimation and reporting in Canada and the US.
John Willms and John Georgakopoulos will share their expertise in environmental law to discuss the differences between civil and criminal environmental liability.
Fred Maefs, Crown Counsel, Ministry of the Attorney General Legal Services Branch – Environment
Fred has prosecuted numerous cases arising from violations of environmental legislation across Ontario, and has the distinction of successfully obtaining the highest penalties ever imposed. Prior to joining the Ministry, he was a Crown Attorney in Toronto and has held senior positions within the enforcement units of securities industry regulators. As senior prosecutor for the Ontario Securities Commission and the Toronto Stock Exchange, he has appeared at all levels of the courts.
Fred Maefs‘ vast experience will provide a fascinating look at case law, and enforcement and prosecution issues.
